Description
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Malaysia, with ischaemic heart disease alone accounting for 15% of deaths in 2020. However, there is still a lack of an effective and sustainable solution for this chronic disease in Malaysia. While peer-led lifestyle programs may effectively manage diabetes in a community, not much is known of such programs in the prevention of CVD risk, especially in vulnerable groups.
Seven states (Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah and Sarawak) have a B40 cut-off household income lower than RM4,000 (DOSM, 2020). This points to a relatively low income earned by people living in these states, which is an indication of poorer purchasing power and healthcare affordability as compared to the average population. This correlates with Grabovschi et al. (2013) who have highlighted vulnerable populations are at risk of poor healthcare disparities and health quality.
Hence, we aim to conduct a need assessment to answer robust but fundamental questions exploring a B40 community's perception, belief, motivation and willingness to adopt CVD-related lifestyle behavioural changes. Subsequently, a digital health framework will be developed to address the lifestyle behaviours of individuals with a high risk to develop CVD.
This two-year study will be conducted at Kulim, Kedah in collaboration with a local NGO.
Eligibility criteria:
1) A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, community health, public health or closely-related fields from a recognised university.
2) Have community-based research experience.
3) Have a good statistical background (e.g. SPSS).
4) Meet Monash University’s Masters degree requirements and English language proficiency criteria.
5) Have a good command of Bahasa Malaysia.
6) Posses valid driving license and is willing to travel to study sites.
7) Independent, enthusiastic, responsible, proactive and well-developed communication skills.
The successful candidates will receive a fee waiver and a monthly allowance of RM2000. Research expenses including travelling are funded by MOHE FRGS.
