Health Promoting Emergency Departments (HPED): Innovation, Opportunity and Overcoming Barriers

Description
To create a model for a HPEDs that will lead the way in the reduction of chronic disease in Victoria through the use of new digital technologies, culminating in an increase in patients receiving education resources and appropriate referrals, and ultimately aim to reduce Emergency Department (ED) attendances. • Model Development o Extensive review of the literature to inform the development of an innovative model for best practice o Exploring possibilities of the digital technology to be trialled, for example an interactive ‘smart kiosk’ that would be located in ED waiting rooms with the capacity to: collect information including selected vital signs (with direct transfer to EMRS and mandatory alert notification) and risk factor identification. 360 degree communication would be possible through: integration with EMRS; provision of timely HP information to the patient; and potentially transfer of information to the patient’s GP. The Kiosk would also offer a brief intervention and flag the opportunity for the ED clinician/LMO to reinforce HP messages. An alternative or complimentary format is a web interface that patients could access on their smart phones after they have registered at Triage to link in to the information and EMRS. Data security would be paramount in all cases. o Human factors analysis, focus groups, and site visits o Strong emphasis on consumer involvement in design and evaluation.
