Prevalence and impact of frailty in people hospitalised with acute exacerbations of chronic lung disease in the Mornington Peninsula region: a retrospective registry audit

Description
This study aims to identify the prevalence and impact of frailty among patients admitted to hospital due to acute exacerbations of chronic lung disease (e.g. asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, adult CF) using novel methods designed by the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA. Frailty has been identified using a combination of hospital data (combination of 'big data' approaches, machine learning, natural language processing, DRGs) in a unique registry servicing the Mornington Peninsula region of Victoria. Data on all available patients with a suitable admission diagnosis coded with the frailty algorithm will be included and rates of readmission evaluated and compared against patients with the similar condition but no frailty. Follow-up 30-day readmissions will serve as the primary outcome. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with NCHA data analysts to extract relevant data and will be supported by A/Prof. Christian Osadnik at all relevant stages of the project. **Actual workplace location is flexible and varies according to stage of project (A/Prof. Osadnik is based at Monash University's Peninsula Campus but also supervises student projects remotely where appropriate)**
